A Thai student wanted tips and suggestions on increasing his score in the IELTS tests he was to answer. This student was a well qualified professional, who was given the opportunity to study overseas by his employer with the promise of a high profile job and a good salary raise once back in Thailand. All he was required to do is clear his IELTS tests and get a degree from a foreign university. The obstacle was that the employer was not willing to give him the time off to prepare for his exams.

The Thai student found it very difficult and challenging to prepare for IELTS, managing his job and studying at the same time was a touch task. In order to seek some help he wrote to a renowned columnist of a famous newspaper, who writes on IELTS and answers readers queries. The columnist responded that other than preparing for the course he needed to have a strong foundation in the basics of English. He also asked the student to take two months off and improve his skills in areas on English listening, reading, writing and speaking. This was not the answer the student was looking for, it seemed far from reasonable to him.

IELTS officers were quoted saying that it takes a minimum of six months for a person to master the basics of English language and exceed from his current ranking position. This tells us that clearing IELTS is not an easy task to achieve. In spite of its so called 'sensitive' way of asking questions in all four areas, IELTS is considered a benchmark for English language skills. On the basis on this test a candidate is judged on excelling abroad in higher studies, considering it to be realistic and rather fair.

There are no short cuts to exceed in IELTS. Other than getting oneself through with study material provided, the candidate should concentrate on mastering the basics of English language. Exposure to English language in the form of watching television or movies, listening to the radio and grasping the language as much as possible is never time wasted. Educators believe that an IELTS candidate should know his English vocabulary and language well, what matters most is what sounds grammatically right. To an experienced listener, what seems right is more often than not considered right.

IELTS - worldwide recognition and importance

An IELTS test consists of forty minutes of listening, sixty minutes of reading, sixty minutes of writing and fourteen minutes of speaking. This makes it a comprehensive English language evaluation test for individuals.

With the widespread of English language users, English being the international language used in international business, relations, politics, IELTS test takers are increasing by the day. Individuals certified in the IELTS test are internationally recognised. IELTS test takers have increased around the world over a decade, more specifically in Europe. IELTS is a partnership association of British council, IDP IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge. It's designed not just to evaluate grammar, but to emphasise on the communication level of proficiency in English language. Getting a good score in IELTS helps one in the migration process to Canada, Australia and United States of America.

The best strategy to master in IELTS is to understand each section specifically. The secret for success is of course constant practise, hard work and persistence. One has to absorb oneself in English language writing, reading, speaking and listening in order to learn and score high. There are online websites available that guide candidates in test taking methods, which include an innovative approach and interactive based exercises and help them perform well.

There are various tricks to master the trade - listening skills can be improved by listening to English radio channels, watching movies and news; writing skills by writing articles and essays. One has to rewrite them each time correcting and improvising on grammar, sentence structure, spelling mistakes. Speaking skills can be mastered by recording one's voice, playing it again and listening to it to improve pronunciation and grammatical errors. These simple but effective steps will help one increase their IELTS score for sure.
